VeloHora – making out Hora, reviving the tradition!

On Sunday, September 20, 2009, a big celebration was held in Chisinau for all those who strive for a healthy and active lifestyle!

Natural water Gura Cainarului revives the tradition of mass sporting events. On the eve of World Carfree Day, which is celebrated on September, 22, we organized a bicycle race on the streets of the capital of Moldova together with the performance of freestylers in the Grand National Assembly Square.

This cycling race connected all parts of the city. The race started from the central square at 12.00. Everyone who wished to participate could join the movement at any of 3 control points: Botanica, Rascani and Sculeanca. Total length of the route through Chisinau was 22, 5 km.

 

According to the organizers, over two thousand cyclists attended this bike ride. Cycling marathon participants received T-shirts with the logo of the action and numbered bracelets, giving the chance to win 3 GIANT bikes.

After the race a show in the square was held, that involved riders, roller skaters, skateboarders and BMX racers from Russia, Ukraine and Moldova. To organize the show, for the first time in Moldova a skate park, brought from the Ukraine, was designed. Along with the professionals, everyone who had passed the professional selection, could show their abilities in riding a bike, roller skating or skateboard. The best got special prizes from the partners of this event.

"We decided to unite the cyclists, whose quantity on the Moldovan roads increases every year," said Danil Balaban, the representative of the VeloHora organizing comittee - natural water Gura Căinarului. "We hope that this day, after participants of VeloHora had left their cars and took bicycles, will become the starting point of a large bicycle action in our country. This holiday means a new tradition and the next year we ask everyone to join this initiative and contribute to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle."

 

The action was supported by the Environmental Movement of Moldova, Public Association "Green Future", Cycling Federation of Moldova and informal associations of cyclists. The main media partners were represented by Hit FM radio together with such newspapers as "Antenna", "Komsomolskaya Pravda v Moldove", "Argumenty i Fakty Moldova", "Sport Courier", "Radio 7", Internet portals Play.md, AllMoldova.com and AllFun.md.
